In a move towards sustainable agriculture and emissions reduction, Vietnam’s cashew industry is embracing the potential of carbon credits. With each cashew tree capable of absorbing up to 400 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2), cultivating cashew trees using low-emission methods can yield significant financial rewards. Farmers can earn approximately $400 per hectare through the sale of carbon credits, signaling a shift towards green production for Vietnam’s billion-dollar cashew sector.
Launching the Green Cashew Project
Gia Bao Group, in partnership with Green Journey, a social enterprise, recently launched the Green Cashew Project. This initiative aims to develop nearly 800 hectares of sustainable cashew plantations in Binh Phuoc and surrounding regions. The project’s primary goals are to support cashew farmers in enhancing their production capabilities while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. Part of this effort includes collaborating with various stakeholders to evaluate and quantify the carbon credits generated by cashew trees.
In addition to supporting sustainable cashew farming, the establishment of a green cashew processing facility in Binh Phuoc is anticipated to advance the cashew industry and contribute to the broader goal of transforming Vietnam’s agriculture into a more environmentally sustainable sector.
Understanding Carbon Credits and Their Market Potential
Carbon credits are tradeable certificates that represent the right to emit a specified amount of CO2 or equivalent greenhouse gases. One carbon credit is equivalent to one ton of CO2 or its equivalent. While carbon credits are a relatively new concept in Vietnam, they are rapidly gaining traction on the global market, which is experiencing swift growth.
Vietnam’s agriculture sector, along with forestry, is increasingly seen as a vital area for generating carbon credits, with the potential to create around 57 million carbon credits annually. Among various crops, cashews, rice, and coffee are highlighted for their significant carbon credit generation capabilities.
Calculations indicate that cashew trees offer high carbon credit value. On average, each cashew tree can absorb 400 kg of carbon throughout its lifespan. Under international standards, every 2.5 cashew tree can generate one carbon credit. With about 200 cashew trees per hectare, this equates to 80 carbon credits per hectare. At a trading price of $5 per ton—mirroring the 10.3 million carbon credits sold by the forestry sector in 2023—the commercial value of carbon credits from cashew farming could be substantial, potentially reaching tens of millions of credits.
Binh Phuoc: Leading the Charge in Green Cashew Cultivation
Trần Văn Phương, Deputy Director of Binh Phuoc’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the province’s commitment to developing cashew plantations aimed at generating carbon credits and restructuring the cashew industry towards sustainability. Binh Phuoc is Vietnam’s largest cashew-growing region, making up 50% of the country’s total cashew cultivation area, which spans 320,000 hectares. In 2022, the province initiated a program to develop carbon credit-generating cashew plantations to promote sustainable farming practices, protect the environment, and combat climate change.
“If implemented effectively, this initiative will help improve incomes and living standards for cashew farmers while establishing a sustainable supply chain that attracts investment in cashew processing for export,” Phương explained.
Nguyễn Quốc Trung, Director of AgriCarbon’s Emission Reduction Project in Agriculture, highlighted the substantial potential of carbon credits to provide additional income for cashew farmers. He also emphasized that implementing carbon reduction measures in cashew processing would enhance production efficiency and positively contribute to environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
The Future of Vietnam’s Cashew Industry
Vietnam has maintained its position as the world’s leading cashew processor and exporter for the past two decades. Last year, the country exported 644,000 tons of cashews, generating $3.6 billion—a 24% increase in volume and an 18% increase in value compared to the previous year. The industry aims to achieve $3.8 billion in revenue this year.
As global markets, particularly in Europe, the US, and Japan, increasingly prioritize green and sustainable products, Vietnam’s shift towards sustainable cashew production will not only reduce emissions but also enhance its competitiveness in international markets. The European market, for example, has introduced strict green criteria for imported goods, making the adoption of sustainable practices a critical advantage for Vietnamese cashew exporters.
